Meeting & Minutes

Meeting

10:55: Discussed the importance of central meeting point. A place that characters can relate to, although its a very important convention of a soap i think it is not so important to include it in our trailer. Trailers are short and mysterious, the less information you give to the audience, the more they want to know.

11:20: We briefly outlined other conventions to use in our soap, the representation of race is extremely important especially in the beginning when we are introduced to the impossible marriage due to racism. I think we need to look at it in depth and try to plan how we want to show this to the audiences.

11:40: Set ourselves the tasks of creating a name for our soap. We need something catchy but simple at the same time.

11:50: Meeting finished, objectives set.

Next thing to do:

Analyse and compare all our findings of the research of soaps we were all assigned to.

Barbara-Home & Away
Prince- Eastenders
Yana- Hollyoaks

& Compare and contrast what we liked what we didnt like and what we would like to use in our own trailer.

Summary Of East Enders Viewership

Summary Of East Enders Viewership

Based on the market research by the BBC in 2003, East Enders is mostly watched by 16-24 closely followed by 24-34 year old. An average East Enders episode attracts a total audience share between 45% and 50%.The repeated episode of East Enders on the BBC3 Channel attracts an average of 500,000 viewers, whilst the Sunday omnibus attracts a further 3 million viewers. Since East Enders began on the mainstream BBC One it has achieved some of the highest audiences in British television history.

The launch show attracted an estimated number of 17 million viewers in the 1980's since then the number of viewers watching EastEnders has continued to increase. In 19860 two years since it had been on air EastEnders attracted 30.15 million viewers, for the Christmas episode in which Den handed a divorce letter to his wife Angie.

A figure that would be its largest audience ever. as well as the largest amount of viewers for a soap episode and the 4th largest audience for the British television channel ever and the highest television audience for a single channel in 1980'sin comparison, the smallest amount for an East Enders episode was around 6.2 million in 2004 more than the lowest of its rivals Coronation Street and Emmerdale Despite a decade and a half of high viewership, it was most popular in the early 2000's Attracting an average of 15.Million for the most episodes and peaks of unto 25million for the climaxes of popular story lines.

Sonia's shock birth in 2002 was watched by 19.3 million viewers and in 2001 Mel's marriage to Steve Owen was watched.

Short EVALUATION!!!! IMPORTANT FOR YOUR COMMENTS!

Ok, we nearly over with the research, any other comments you lot want to tell me or What do you want to do next to get over with?

The storyline we've discussed, the characters and the plot.

I think we should move it up a notch and start to build up our own trailer, because soon we're going to have to do the poster. :)

:)

Commentaires ?? Merci :)

Extra Research On East Enders

East Enders has its own offical website were the audeinces can access and take quizes and also they can watch videos if they may have missed an episode the link for the site is ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/eastenders/

I think this can help us realised we need to have a wide range of audiences we should also make our own website or a fan site were we post information and videos for our soap trailer so that we can have audeinces from other places in the country not just the school...
Creating our own distribution website will help us to get more audeinces and this can promote our soap trailer and hopefully we will get a more wider audience range and more viewings.

Nials Revenge Trailer

Nialls Revenge

With Nialls Revenge, I decided to analyse the Hollyoaks trailer to get more background research on what makes a trailer effective and hopefully include that in our own.In the beginning we are straight away led to a low lighted room where Niall is solilqouzing "Once upon a time mum, you chose not to keep a child".

Obviously bitter, the mis en scene and the characters appearance sets a thrill factor, the music is also completely out of tune which emphasises the dangerous situation. I like this it does create a thriller effect but at the same time its a completely dramatic peice thats guaranteed to catch the audiences attention and leave it at a cliffhanger.

We are then guided to crying Tina who shouts that "max" (her son) needs her so her mother Myra should choose her to live. The grotesque dark grey background sets the alarming factor as we immediately feel like a part of this dangerous situation.

There is a picture at the back smudged, yet not straight, perhaps hinting that there is going to be violent or extreme conflict. Tina being the mother of the child and being in a struggling situation with Russ, is a good way of making the audience sympathise, I think its extremely important to make sure that the audiences questions which character they think will die or and which will survive.
The cliffhanger effect is becoming a more conventional part of soaps, therefore, i think showing less gives more meaning. This may have been a short trailer but it did leave a lot of questions, like what is going to happen next? Who are these character? Why are the suffering? What lives do they lead? Who will survive?

The characters also demonstrate the fear through crying, and actions so Nial is talking with his arms folded and smirkingly looking into the camera, confident of his evil actions. We see Myra with a single light at the back of her, while fearly trying to get to grips with the situation "but they are all my babies", I think the light at the back could signify a hint of hope yet at the same time, the whole dark place with 1 tiny light at the back also demonstrates the light being able to go off any minute.I think that the light in the end is a good way of perhaps showing that a lifeline may go out, so therefore one character will die soon. The whole dingy setting also creates a scary effect and the blank walls make the place seem like a prison, > perhaps> indicating that the blank walls are no way out.

Home and Away (History)

Who Started It?
In 1986, Alan Bateman came up with this idea; he then decided that creating a brand new TV soap could be in rival with Australia's channel ten Neighbours. Mr. Bateman knew that he would be putting himself into a lot of challenge and had to come up with great ideas that would create more tension, and would be much realistic.

When was it broadcasted?
Home and Away was on TV in January 1988 and was viewed in most Australian homes; it also tend to achieve satisfactory ratings. As most of the viewers were so used to watching Neighbours, it took them quite a while to adjust and accept the brand new soap. Although ratings was low initially, the TV station gave Mr. Bateman and his crew some time to find its own audience. The main reason for why this happened could be that not enough planning was made as in the producer and head team of Home And Away could have taken more time to investigate into what they would like and how they they could beat Neighbours in the market. They could have taken into consideration when Neighbours have their viewings, what kind of issues they tend to show. But gradually, its popularity grew.
It then got a time whereby Home and Away was placed in the same time slot as Neighbours, which created some sort of soap rivalry. After some time, Neighbours time slot was quickly changed.

Initial Setting?

Mr. Bateman decided to make its setting very Australian. Which in other words mean that he decided to use all the beautiful beach side and landscape shots. It was set in Australia's beautiful, coastal town of Summer Bay. Here in Summer Bay there was a beach and it was hot; it also had a surf club and a beach side diner where you could purchase a choccy milkshake. <<<
Theme music??

The theme music for home and away is very famous and almost everyone knows the words to this song. The main purpose for this music is to grab the attention of the viewers and this has obviously worked well.
Hold me in your arms! Don’t let me go! I want to stay forever. Closer each dayyyyyy... Home and Away!'<<

Important Story line That Grabbed The attention of Viewers??

Life at the Summer Bay also had difficulties, even though Summer Bay seemed to mainly adjusted with young love until much more interesting issues started to creep in. The storyline of the Summer Bay stalker could be considered as the most successful storyline of 2005.
In 2006, Home and Away appeared to move onto a completely level as we saw shots of characters using drugs, violence and gripping family love triangles. This also seemed to work well as a lot of viewers could relate to it in some sort of way.
Typical Lines From Main Some Characters.

Irene Roberts played by Lynne McGrange Typical Line: "Gawd save Ireland!" Everytime an audience hears this line, he/she quickly remembers Irene. (The bay's second best foster mum)

Sally Fletcher played by Kate Ritchie. Typical line: "This family's falling apart and all you're worried about is how tall you are!"

WHO PUSHED CLAIRE?-The trailer analysis

Who pushed Claire?

An extreme and intense trailer leaving a HUGE amount of questions at the end I think what works really well is the whle idea of using flashbacks to suggest the characters that may have pushed claire. But due to there being so many characters hating her and Claire being a famously "hated person" in Hollyoaks village, it is more difficult for us to work out who actually pushes her.

The tension in the music builds up enormously, from the start we see her on the roof leaning over checking whos on the streets, we are then guided to her being punched by roxy, sparking off conflict and arguments straight away.

Claire is famously hated in Hollyoaks village due to her nature of being an evil "bitch". She ruins the lives of other characters in other ways, for example with Max, trying to get him killed and manipulating him into thinking that she is his perfect wife, until he finds out. I think its extremely important for people to understand that this character is someone not to be messed with. The whole point is that conveying this in a 0:41 second trailer, it triggers of many questions already. The main one, is she dead? Who pushed her?

The flashbacks demostrated different conflict methods, for example O.B pushing her to the wall and Max punching her in the pub. Roxanne punching her.

Although we know how bitchy this person Claire is, we still feel sorry for her when she is pushed over.

I think in our trailer we also need a considerate amount of cliffhangers and use music to create tension and a good atmosphere. Music does play a vital role in helping audiences become more in touch with the soap itself. Especially the soap titles, Eastenders titles for example, the whole theme tune is vital.
